Only one of the four Croatian doubles jumped the first hurdle at the 3rd ATP Challenger Split Open. The Sabanov brothers did not score three match points, Gojo and Serdarušić remained on the set won on Tuesday, Marino Jakić and Karlo Krolo also dropped out, and the only ones to celebrate were Duje Ajduković and Frane Ninčević. In the individual competition, we got the first quarterfinalists.

Duje Ajduković and Frane Ninčević passed the first round at the Split Open with a great game, their first joint at this level. With 6:2, 7:6 (5) they defeated Karol Drzewiecki and Daniel Masur and will play against last week's finalists, Szymon Walkow and Jan Zielinski, in tomorrow's quarterfinals. Duje and Frane could have triumphed earlier because they had 4:1 in the second set, but in the end, they still maintained psychological stability in the "tie break" and came to victory.

Very little was missing for two of our doubles to join them. Ivan and Matej Sabanov were especially close. They had a service for the match and three match-points against Gregoire Barrere and Alban Olivetti, but they lost 4:6, 7:5, 10-6. Too bad.

Borna Gojo and Nino Serdarušić can also complain, who took the first set of Andrej Golubev and Aleksandar Nedovjesov just before the break due to rain yesterday but failed to finish the job on Wednesday. They lost 6:7 (6), 7:6 (4), 10-7 although in the second set they had 0-30 at 5:5, and in the third set, they turned 2-6 into 6-6. They played great and fought, but the result was not on their side. Marino Jakić and Carlo Krolo had the least chances of our doubles against the French combination Doumbia / Reboul (7:5, 6:3).

Like last week, we were left without the No1 seed in the singles in the first round. Frenchman, Gregoire Barrere, was stopped by Argentine Pedro Cachin (6:3, 6:3) who arrived from Oeiras, Portugal, where he won the Challenger title last week as a qualifier. At the start, the No6 seed Lorenzo Giustino was eliminated against last week's semifinalist Andrea Collarini 6:4, 6:4, while Quentin Halys knocked out Daniel Masur with 6:3, 6:2.

Four matches of the second round were played as well. Apart from the duel between Nino Serdarušić and Elias Ymer, which belonged to the Swede, there was also tension in the match between Cem Ilkel and the No3 seed Hugo Gaston. After turning 2:5 in the third set and saving the match point, the Turk celebrated 2:6, 6:3, 7:6 (7) after two and a half hours of play.

Last week in Split, Thanasi Kokkinakis needed three sets to win against Filip Horanski, but today he celebrated much easier - 6:1, 6:2 - and the Frenchman, Mathias Bourgue, advanced to the quarterfinals.

Portuguese Joao Dominguesa 6:3, 6:4. It sounds incredible that already today, Wednesday, the Split Open lost all eight seeds!

The remaining matches of the second round in singles and all quarterfinal matches of doubles will be played on Thursday.
